As you will have seen, my stated mission for more than a decade has been:
"To improve the financial affairs of as many people as possible."
And, as I've explained, I've sought to deliver that mission in that time via my books, emails, regular posts, and YouTube channel.
For the last several years I've also co-run a face-to-face mastermind course roughly once every other year. It runs over several months, with participants meeting in central London every few weeks for five full Saturday sessions.
That course is aimed at entrepreneurs, intrapreneurs, and busy professionals who want to supercharge their professional and personal progress over six months or so.
As you might expect, a key focus of the programme is to improve their financial affairs as a natural function of that work.
One of the things I've wanted to do for years is distil down the essence of that mastermind group into an online video course that could be made available to many more people.
I've been particularly motivated to do this by some of the feedback I've had from many of the course participants along the way.
Perhaps one of the most powerful examples of this is a message I received from one of the group a little while back. A delightful gentleman called Phil from Northern Ireland wrote to me out of the blue a couple of years after being part of the group. As he put it:
"I was updating my net worth statement and found a version I sent you two years ago. My net worth has doubled since then. So just a word of encouragement and a big thank you. I really can't believe the difference looking back on where I was and what I have achieved in the last two years."
- Phil H, previous mastermind participant
In fact, I caught up with Phil recently, and by now he has actually trebled his net worth.
This led us to have a conversation about whether he might be too "risk on" at the moment for what it is worth, but he seems pretty confident that he has his mix of investments right.
That confidence comes from the fact that he has acquired a depth of knowledge about finance and capital markets that all too few people ever do.
And it is this knowledge that I want to spread even more widely and deeply than we can through the face-to-face programme alone.
To that end, I've spent a good deal of time this year pulling together the content for a new flagship course.
I'm calling it the "Own Your World Mastermind."
What you get
The programme includes a comprehensive, premium video course covering topics that I wish far more people understood, including defining what success looks like to you personally and the paramount importance of psychology when it comes to all things finance.
It is a distillation of all of the key financial ideas I've delivered over more than a decade, including (but not limited to):
- The crucial difference between financial advice and financial education.
- Investing versus trading.
- How to find the money for investment.
- The key investing vehicles and asset classes.
- The key accounts you will need, and how to think about your pension versus your ISA.
- All my work around "how to invest so that crashes don't matter".
- The critical idea of sequence risk - one of the least understood and important risks in investment, all too often ignored by a great deal of the finance industry.
- Four key investment ideas that are largely unchanged ever since capital markets were invented, each of which can help you minimise the risk of loss and increase your potential returns over a lifetime of investment.
The "mastermind" bit of the title refers to the fact that participants will also be offered two one-to-one Zoom sessions with me:
One shortly after joining, so we can get to know each other and you can share your key goals, and one at the end of the process, once you've had a chance to work through all the materials, to review your progress.
Who is this for?
The course is designed for anyone who has been meaning to "get this stuff sorted" for years, perhaps even decades, but has never quite found the time.
Whether you are an entrepreneur, an intrapreneur, a manager, or a busy professional, I know all too well just how hard it can be to find that little bit of extra time to get to grips with this most fundamental life-admin and get this stuff sorted.
I've been there myself - even as someone with a financial services career in the City of London!
Years can pass us by and we keep meaning to sort things out but life just gets in the way.
This problem can be particularly pronounced when it comes to all things finance and financial admin - in the main because of how overwhelming and complicated this particular subject can seem.
My new course seeks to address this by distilling the most critical information for you in one place.
What the course should deliver
Done well, the impact of this material on your life should certainly be measured in five figures at the very least. Over a long enough period of time, however, it could be six or even seven figures - for a high earner who takes the right steps and keeps at it.
This can and should be the impact of getting your mindset and investment habits right over time, and of getting the admin squared away once and for all.
In more than a decade since I started Plain English Finance, I have seen this happen time and time again.
I've already given you the example from Phil above, but I've seen this sort of outcome year after year, highlighted by testimonials just like his on our YouTube channel, on Amazon, on Audible, and in my inbox.
I've had parents tell me that they have built Junior ISA accounts worth tens of thousands of pounds, and people in their early thirties who have six figure pension pots and ISA accounts north of £50,000 alongside that.
Often these sorts of results have been achieved by folks who aren't particularly high earners.
What this course is NOT
To be very clear, this course doesn't promise to make you rich overnight.
I'm not teaching trading, aggressive stock picking strategies, or any kind of market timing. It is about as far away from that entire approach philosophically as it is possible to be.
It is also critical to understand that this is all about financial education, not financial advice.
What this course IS
It is about applying many of the key fundamental first principles of capital markets and investment with confidence, consistency, persistence, and patience over many years.
It is about having a financial proxy on human progress and benefitting from the inevitable mathematics of compounding.
Done well, this has a high probability of delivering an outcome that can genuinely be described as "life-changing" - as so many people have already experienced.
It should also bring real peace of mind along the way, and the satisfaction that comes with finally having sorted out one of life's most important "to-do" items.
